Our Story
MPNZ has been part of New Zealand's dairy sector since 1932. The name has changed various times, but the purpose remains the same: lifting the standard of work for everyone who designs, installs, tests, and maintains the milking and pumping systems NZ dairy farming depends on.
Where we started
In 1932, a group of industry professionals got together around a simple idea: to provide standardised training, clearer standards, and a shared voice for the industry that would be good for everyone. Farmers, tradespeople, and the businesses that support them.
A lot has changed in nearly 100 years. Farms are bigger, systems are more complex, and the industry operates under far more scrutiny than ever before. We have come a long way, yet, the core purpose we were set up for remains the same: to provide skilled and well trained professionals and standards to support New Zealand’s largest primary industry.
What we stand for
MPNZ works for its Members; the businesses that supply and service the sector, and the Tradespeople and Technicians that work within it.
In practice, that means:
Developing and implementing standards for the design and performance of the milk harvesting, pumping, and water application industries
Running practical, relevant NZQA-recognised training
Advocating for members when legislation or regulation affects their work
Connecting qualified professionals with the farmers and businesses that need them
We encourage ethical and professional trading practices of Members
A fresh name, the same organisation
In 2026, we became MPNZ. Same team, same values, same commitment to the industry. We updated the name because it's cleaner and easier to say, and because it better reflects what we actually do across both the milking and pumping sectors.
Part of the reason for the refresh was to make the organisation easier to find and engage with. For farmers googling a tester. For young people thinking about a trade career in the industry. For businesses looking to join a credible industry body. We want MPNZ to be easy to understand at first glance.
